LA Smithies, Let’s Light Up the Skies
Global Illumination Night 2020: Saturday, May 16th
We are going to join with other Smith alums for a special celebration, Global Illumination Night 2020, in honor of the graduating class… And we encourage you to do it with an LA twist.
Eva Rabin ’08 has created three DIY LA-themed pushpin lantern designs. We hope you’ll choose one, or make them all. You can easily make them with objects found in your home. By sharing your lantern, you shine a light on the collective Smith spirit we have here in Los Angeles.
FYI: If you already have a lantern, you can skip to steps #6 and #7 below.
Create your own Pushpin lantern
7 Steps to Your LA-Themed Illumination Night Lantern
Gather your materials: some cardboard, pushpin or sharp-tipped object, the printed template, blank sheet of paper, some tape, a glass or plastic container, a light source such as tea light, battery-operated light or small flashlight. Watch the how-to video.
Place your printed template over a blank sheet of paper. Tape it to cardboard.
Insert the push pin along the black lines of the template
Once complete, take the bottom sheet and wrap it around a glass, vase or plastic container.
Insert light inside the glass, vase or plastic container
Take a picture of your lantern, preferably at night, and then upload your photo* in TWO places:
a) The SmithClubLA gallery for local-area graduates, click here.
b) The main Smith Alumnae Relations gallery for all graduates to view, click here. Please upload your photo by Wednesday, May 13th.
Shine your light on your porch or in your window beginning at dusk, Saturday May 16th and share on social media using the hashtag #smithilluminates and #LAsmithilluminates.
